Cali Bullet Train Breaking the Rules, Losing Big Supporters

Curbed L.A. -- All is not well in California high-speed rail land--some of the project's earliest backers have turned against the project, saying that concessions that have been made not only violate voter-imposed requirements on the project's funding, but have meanwhile taken the "high speed" out of high-speed rail. For instance, Quentin Kopp--who cowrote the legislation that launched HSR in California--says that the law requires that the project be built in "usable segments," and that each segment be fully funded before work begins, but "he says the current plan to build 130 miles of rail in the Central Valley for $6 billion, starting this summer, will not produce a usable segment,"... The first feasible usable segment...at a cost of $31 billion--way more money than the state has on hand.

Still, it was funny seeing how posters knew so little about the HSR history in California....... or got all their information from the always-lying network (Faux).....and internet bloggers in their BVDs.... (grin)

I understand why supporters would be backing from the project...

What if this was nothing more than an underhanded way to fully subsidize the construction of some "long-needed" freight infrastructure to loosen bottlenecks and help flow of freight trains? Build the Tehachapi tunnel to replace the overloaded loop, and suddenly there's no more money for "High Speed Rail."

Hammond, Indiana has already permanently lost bus service, with East Chicago coming soon. Don't be surprised to read up on the death of the South Shore line on this website; the idea of expanding to Lowell is already dead.

Maybe the legislators got used to writing laws they don't need to abide by, thus causing this.

Interesting that mosts of the posts are from people outside of the State of California. Why can't more folks here in Calfornia also see how stupid this project is and put a complete stop to it?

Why do they have to reinvent the wheel? Buy the technology from others who have done it already! The route also bypasses the east bay, which is more populace and economically important then San Francisco.

Who cares what the law says, they make it up as they go along.
It's a "green energy" project because it will get people out of their cars and onto more efficient public transportation. Right?

Being a person who works by railroads, there are a number of mistakes in this plan. These rail lines have to be in a much more straight form. On the map, it looks like there are a too many bends. The other problem is involving slow moving traisn, which would evidentaly cause delay. As for the costs, that was usual for the government.

These people had better learn to keep their eyes more open for problems.

This is a good example of the bait and switch that is out of control government. Obama is very good at this. Get elected or legislation passed by saying what everyone wants to hear only to change plans, after the fact to what they really wanted to do in the first place.
