Cars of the future will be computers on wheels

USA Today -- HANOVER, Germany – A handful of people have seen the car of the near-future, and it looks suspiciously like a lunar land rover. Or a plane. Or a driverless vehicle. Take your choice.

At auto shows and tech conferences around the globe, prototypes of whiz-bang cars offer a visual narrative into what to expect on the nation's streets a decade from now. Some already are in production; others will be shortly, carmakers say. But in technology laboratories and engineering facilities worldwide, the imaginings don't stop there.

Think 15 to 20 years out.

VIDEO: See the Terrafugia in action

By 2030, city streets will teem with small, driverless cars whose wireless capabilities direct traffic flow smoothly, rendering traffic lights unnecessary, car designers and automotive visionaries say.

Cars of the future will be computers on wheels. Sensors, cameras, radar, lasers and very accurate GPS. Cars of the future will have their 'eyes and ears' on at all times and can usually drive much better than a human. Future computer cars can maintain the correct speed, stay in highway lanes, maintain the correct spacing between vehicles moving at same speed as other vehicles, higher density traffic possible using the same highway at the same time so more traffic flows, know where other similar computer vehicles are to avoid collisions, internet access for vehicle refueling or charging station locations, cell phone and TV access and the passenger can do almost anything else waiting to get where they are going. Also, detect people on sidewalks, crosswalks, walking side of roads and bicycles too.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

This could be a benefit, but we should also be educating drivers. Notice I didn't just say NEW drivers . . . should be ALL drivers

Why shouldn't cars have more computers in them in the future? Everything else is neaded in that direction too.

Hmmmm....Don't know if I like this idea -- I actually LIKE to drive -- And I don't want some automated computer doing it for me!

On the other hand, I can see where automated braking and sensors can help prevent accidents....

A lot of this is very futuristic stuff -- not to mention ridiculously expensive! It will be interesting to see which innovations actually make it to the mass market.
