Clean diesels finally catching on

USA Today -- Every time we've driven a new diesel car lately, we've been amazed at how indistinguishable they have become from conventional gas cars. No clatter. No smoke. No rattling engine noise. Now it appears consumers are catching on: Registrations of diesel-powered passenger vehicles increased by 24.3% in the U.S. from 2010 through 2012, says an advocacy group, the Diesel Technology Forum.

The increase is not as much as for hybrids, at 33%, but far more than overall registrations of all vehicles at 2.7%, the group says, basing its information on data from compilers R.L. Polk and Company.

"Clean diesel and hybrid cars are showing consistent and impressive growth patterns in the U.S.," said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the forum, in a statement.

Diesel fuel isn't that much higher than premium gas, and sometimes lower, what we need is LOWER PRICED vehicles!

Anyone that does not consider a diesel if the are available and affordable can not claim to have much knowledge.

Diesel works pretty well but the current cost is a little pricey. even for the increased mileage.

Probably a good thing. Question is, how do modern diesels deal with -20F? I am one of God's Frozen People (95% of the world's people live in places with warmer winters than Minnesota) - if diesel's lack of performance in cold has been fixed it might be something to think about.

Diesel's higher thermal efficiency more than makes up for the fact that it takes more of a bbl of crude to make distillate than it does for UG. I've driven diesels all my life...even the old ones can be made to run smoke free, if maintained property and DRIVEN properly. Most people are "diesel-stupid," but then again, most Americans as stupid, period.

Quick68 I totally agree with you! I was going to say that the price tag is up with a savings model, and not that down with regular stuff. It is just so expensive to travel!!! And necessary sometimes too.

Clean diesels are very good and a well tuned engine can really push the limits. I have read of them getting up to 80mpg without any hybrid setup...

No matter how you look at it diesel fuel is a low grade, highly polluting fuel that should be broken down at the refineries.

Isn't it amazing how the word "clean" can be so "deceptively used". This PR piece is written to satisfy an agenda.
