Clean-energy intiative takes lumps with wind turbine controversies

Quincy Patriot Ledger -- The web site for the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center features a headline on its main page. It reads: “The heart of the clean energy revolution resides in Massachusetts.”

But in any revolution, struggle precedes change. And struggle is exactly what towns like Kingston, Scituate and Hanover have encountered in recent months after installing new wind turbines in an effort to reduce energy costs and help the environment.

Groups of residents in Kingston and Scituate claim the turbines are making them sick. Studies are being conducted to determine whether the turbines should be shut down, and both towns have been slapped with lawsuits from angry citizens.

In light of the turbine complaints, the Mass. Clean Energy Center ... launching a year-long noise study on turbines across the state.

QUOTE :::Wondering why we have not heard concern about THIS or THIS environmental tragedy? Or THIS? Or THIS? ::::

Pics of oil soaked birds are shocking and the fact is no one wants this to happen. When the liberal controlled media and its handmaiden, the enviros manipulate you by playing on your emotions with bird pics, they do no one any good. They are only interested in power grabs and returning the US to the stone age.

When accidents happen we will do everything possible to remedy it. Big Oil is not your enemy. Despite how the left, the enviros, Al Gore, and the liberal controlled Big mMedia slants their reportage of American business and Big Oil. US corporations are run by Americans who are just as horrified by oil soaked birds as anyone else.

If you refuse to accept this, then you alternative is;

Follow the science.
Science and innovation will help get US away from this unhealthy fossil fuel addicted trap.

Wondering why we have not heard concern about THIS or THIS environmental tragedy?

Or THIS?

Or THIS?

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Too true Hemond.

And what of the future? Now Cakes would have us believe that the bird avoidance technology will eliminate bird kills substantially. Really?

Not according to tge American Bird Conservancy. Their studies show that by 2030, there will likely be more than 100,000 wind turbines in the U.S., and these are expected to kill at least one million birds each year—probably significantly more. Wind farms are also expected to impact almost 20,000 square miles of terrestrial habitat, and over 4,000 square miles of marine habitat by 2030, some of it critical to threatened species.

Do Cakes and other Eco-imperialist believers care???

In reality, wind and solar are very 'dirty' power. they are unstable sources and can unbalance the power grid. As there is no way to save a green electron it must be used. When the wind dies or sun gets occluded the power grid must instantly ramp up to cover the loss. Same when the wind comes up or the sun comes from behind a cloud.

This is extremely damaging to the power grid. Plus you still need a conventional power source as backup. Nothing is saved with green energy.

And all Cakes can do is laugh???

Every year at JUST ONE wind farm, an estimated 75 to 110 Golden Eagles are killed by the wind turbines in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area (APWRA). Some lose their wings, others are decapitated, and still others are cut in half.

And Cakes laughs??? Ah yes, Cakes laughs.

The Truth shall set you free!!!

In my book, a lot better than polluting water and causing earthquakes (one in OKC last year was recently shown to be due to water injection).

I FIND YOUR CITATION AMUSING. How long did it take your Secretary to find this old citation? While a scholarly work, I did not see any Bibs newer than 2008. At least one goes back to 1996, but most are of the 2003-2005 variety.

You and I both know that with the rapid gains in Wind technology, a 5 to 10 yo. citation with Bibliographies is worthless.

Further the bulk of this 'citation' covers Cell Towers and Transmission Lines, in other word most anything sticking up in the air. Downtown Austin has any number of those hazards.

I think you appear to be overwrought about bird deaths, I wish you felt as strongly about clean drinking water for PEOPLE. We count too!

The US Fish and Wildlife has found that 440,000 birds are killed by Wind energy each year. Source

Aviator_Rob made some excellent points.

I gotta ask, when did You Tube become the center of the universe for accurate and professional reporting??? GEEZ! My cat is on You Tube! I ask Mack about the wind turbines, and he had no opinion! Smart cat!

Old technology pumped up with taxpayer steroids won't change the laws of physics nor will $$$$ make it "clean". I'd be happy to never see a windmill ever again. They've ruined my desert area. F windmills.

Clean-energy intiative takes lumps with wind turbine controversies. Install wind turbines far away from populated areas and not next to houses OR any populated area!
Install Solar Panels and/or Wind Turbines on the roofs of malls, warehouses, Walmart, Costco, USPS, UPS, airports and many other roofs that are not normally considered as an electrical generating area. Produce the electricity locally and not buying off the grid and with less tranmission 'problems' to get the electricity to where it is needed. A site survey for each installation to make sure the area considered is reasonable for the cost of installation and local conditions are good for electrical production.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

No matter what they say, it all boils down to this--renewable energy is
very expensive. Until it can survive on its own without subsidies, it can't
compete with fossil fuels.

How many birds actually die from wind turbines, @bullseye100? I'd like to see some recent numbers to support that claim. Older wind turbine designs were more prone to birdstrikes but the newer ones turn much more slowly.

Plus, if these wind turbines are so noisy, why don't birds hear them and attempt to fly around them?

@John747, nobody's disputing that we still need to have fossil-fueled powerplants for the times when there's no sun or the wind doesn't blow but having a plant on standby and having one running at 100% capacity are two very different things.

The powerplants are happiest when they're running at full throttle because that's when they make the most money but they'll need to get used to renewables taking some of the demand away from them.

What do you consider "good", @bobdec? Fossil fuels have plenty of downsides. The coal, oil, and gas industry have been getting away with not paying the costs to people's health for decades.

Once they're forced to take those costs into account, renewables will seem like a much better option.
