Detroit 54.5 MPG Mandate Gets Help From U.S. Army’s Tanks

Bloomberg -- The temperature hovers around 120 degrees at the Arsenal of Democracy. Michael Reid keeps up the heat in the laboratory as he tests a Bradley fighting vehicle commonly used under extreme conditions.

Reid, director of vehicle-testing labs at the Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center in Warren, Michigan, leads a staff that also is testing a system to turn exhaust heat into electricity to power a tank’s computer. In time, consumers might see similar fuel-saving technology -- currently consumers’ No. 1 concern -- in a Chevy Malibu or Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The auto industry has a long tradition of adapting military technology to improve passenger cars for civilians, said John Wolkonowicz, an independent auto analyst in Boston who specializes in automotive history.

Maybe they should be working on a 54.5 mpg tank and save the taxpayers some money.

I owned a VW Squareback about 40 years ago. Since it had an air-cooled engine there was no water to circulate for the heater. It had a heat exchanger that tapped the exhaust heat, which worked fine if it was not to cold out. I believe some earlier American cars used a similar system.

Popular Mechanics years ago had plans and a story about using exhaust gases
to cook a meal while on a long journy. The article featured a Volkswagen
Beetle or Microbus, I don't remember which, but it centered about a VW. The
exhaust gases circulated around the object being cooked in an oven designed
and built to heat the food then exit as it rolled on down the road. Early
greenthink.

Well maybe we can get some help from the military. They're always looking for ways to kill and destroy more cheaply.

This is all BS. We could get high gas milage now if we wanted to but the govt. is the holdback because it would mean less road tax coming in.

I don't think there should be mandates, should because the government wants somethings shouldn't mean it can mandate it. The marketplace should decide.

I take exception to the statement where they claim that they are spending billions to develop better mpg. They already have many, they just aren't manufacturing them. Time to get away from gas and diesel!
