Dominion CEO Warns Against Utility Reliance on Natural Gas

Dow Jones Newswires -- The U.S. natural gas boom has been good to Dominion Resources Inc. (D) but the company's top executive warned Friday against an overreliance on the fuel by electric utilities.

While the U.S. has more than enough gas to serve utilities and industry and also export gas overseas, a large-scale move by U.S. utilities to replace their aging coal and nuclear power plants solely with plants that run on natural gas would lead to higher gas and electricity prices for consumers, said Thomas Farrell, Dominion's chief executive.

"If you want to see the price of natural gas rise ... replace our entire fleet, all coal, all nuclear, over the next 20 to 30 years; you're going to regret it," Mr. Farrell said during The Wall Street Journal's Eco-nomics conference in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Dominion has not been very forthright in many instances. What makes them think we should believe them now?

Dominion CEO Warns Against Utility Reliance on Natural Gas, you got that right! Switching everything to natural gas just may Not be the best choice. Have a choice of multiple fuels to power the electrical generating plants.
Heating my house should be much cheaper and many more vehicles should be using natural gas as a fuel. As more and more vehicles use natural gas, how much will the natural gas price go up?
The US natural gas resources belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Export natural gas ONLY if the domestic market has an excess and cannot use all of it.
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

My home is heated by natural gas and I sure do not to see that commodity to increase. It is bad enough gas prices are way out of line but I know it is going to far worse given the proposal by my Governor "Slick" Rick Snyder who is going to increase the gas tax by 60 cents per gallon.

I have to agree with this one. Keep the energy supply diversified. That way failure of one source will not bring us to a stop.

The more that is used, the cheaper it should be unless there is a short supply. Coal and nukes suck big time!
