Hot Trend in Automobiles: Not Owning One

CNBC via Yahoo! Finance -- Whether by choice or through financial reality, the percentage of American households without a car has doubled over the past two decades-and is now approaching 1 in 10.

The impact of this trend could be significant, especially when it comes to alternatives to driving, such as car-sharing and mass transit, according to research by CNW Marketing.

"While the recession was in large part responsible for the latest spurt, the trend was already clear," said CNW's research chief Art Spinella, "A growing number of Americans felt they didn't need or want a personal car."

According to CNW data, the number of U.S. households without a car stood at a modest 5.7 percent in 1991. That figure stayed relatively stable through the early part of the new millennium. But it has been increasing slowly ...

I can't believe this. I could not survive without my car. I agree with Ply440GTX, if you live at home (hopefully your not too old) with mom and dad then maybe you don't need a car.

I also agree with Bezlel, when companies are calling and asking to buy your used vehicle, that tells you something.

Hot Trend in Automobiles: Not Owning One

Number 1 reason: You still live at home with your mother and father...

Why you would/should own one: Your workplace is at least a 20 min. drive away and walking/biking/public transportation is out of the question... Dangerous/even MORE dangerous/doesn't exist.

If so, why are used car prices so high? A recent article stated that.

Cars are a big black hole when it comes to money, but you can save by combining trips and throw in some walking trips and biking trips. You just have to give it some thought.

With the high price of fuel these days and added cost of insurance and repairs and taxes no surprise here in this article.

If our city/area had better transit systems, I'd probably look to only have one car...but alas it is not walking/bus friendly so cars are necessary!

That's nice. If I didn't have to walk 10 miles up hill each way to the store, I would really consider it. Save me over $100 a month with gas and insurance.

I carried that trend until I was about 19. It sucks not having a car, especially as a college student.
