Japan's atomic disaster due to "collusion" : panel report

Reuters -- Japan's Fukushima nuclear crisis was a preventable disaster resulting from "collusion" among the government, regulators and the plant operator, an expert panel said on Thursday, wrapping up an inquiry into the worst nuclear accident in 25 years.

Did they conclude this as an explanation so that they can restart some of the Nuclear plants? The Japanese government probably see that shutting down all (more than 50) plants was going to be difficult for their economy. Replacing all that power generation is very expensive. With the summer when they need more power, they are in deep trouble.

Views like those of coughlin were over simplications of the facts. They showed a gross misunderstanding of what happened.

The reactors and many major ancillary equipment were all designed to withstand earthquakes and they did. Unfortunately, hindsight reviewed a very simple problem. It was with the "insignificant" cooling pumps. There were not critical services with 2 @ 100% units. Unfortunately, both were knocked out by the earthquake. Without cooling, the reactors ran out of control. Obviously, cost reduction was a factor in the design of the facilities where collusion may well have occurred.

And how many nuclear power plants are on fault lines in the USA listerone? Look it up and you may be amazed.

Yes Letem.... Don't get caught!

Our own NRC is in a rather cozy place with the USA Nuclear Industry. Apply the 'lessons learned' here as well.

I wonder if the Japanese have learned anything from this disaster?

The lesson to be learned...be careful when building nuke plants in earthquake zones.

Did I miss something? We've been told by the eco-socialists and progressives that heavy regulation is the answer to almost everything. Don't tell me that regulators are corruptible or incompetent.

I think that 'collusion' is baloney. They were subjected to a HUGE tsunami and stuff happened. The crime was allowing people to stay within 50 miles of that power plant.

Collusion, yes. Built on the Pacific Rim and close to the ocean, I can't think of a more unsafe building site.

Collusion? In actuality, the plants were built too close to the ocean so a high wave could wipe out the generators. Poor enginerring in my opinion.

Get this: 3 jap nuke plants are in total f-ing meltdown, 1000's have died, 25 mile red zones are set up, nuke hysteria (and rightfully so as neighbors are dead or sick!)

We in the US have plants which are close in design, obsolete break down specials and well beyond truly safe and reliable operational life, and yet cosideration is still being given by the NRC to extend operating permits for 10 , 15, or 20 more years!

Talk about cullusion!

Yet all those who howl for more, bigger, stronger govt can only stare blankly when confronted with the repulsive phenomenon of regulatory capture.

What a disaster!

qwerty17: the only one responsible is the nitwit(s?) that thought it was a good idea to put backup generators in a low area near the shoreline.

Actually, that would have been fine aswell, if pumps capable of working in sea water (which there are pumps that can) had been used.

Time to put a bunch of people in lockup for about 20 years.

"collusion" is such a bad word. In America we prefer to call it "a business friendly environment that creates jobs"

Government regulators colluding with the people they're supposed to regulate? No way, that couldn't happen! Government is the answer to everything, everything in government is lily-white, and it's only the nasty, naughty profit-making people who do bad things. I know this, because they taught it to me in the government school I went to.

Kinda reminds me of the waivers granted to B P and others for safety backup closing devices for deep water drilling. Hmmmmmmm.
