Montana looking for fishery damage from oil spill

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has collected samples from fish in the Yellowstone River as part of a process to determine if the fishery was damaged by last year's oil spill and if Exxon Mobil Corp. should pay for restoration work.

Workers captured trout and suckers Wednesday downstream of Laurel where the company's pipeline beneath the river broke last July resulting in an estimated 63,000 gallons of oil entering the river. Less than 1 percent was recovered.

The Billings Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/IhdcsN) the work is part of the Natural Resources Damage Assessment overseen by the state Department of Justice.

The state is looking for evidence the fishery

This is so sad! I agree there are way to many spills!!! This needs to be investigated to find out why so many are happening!

If "63,000 gallons of oil entered the river and less than 1 percent was recovered" that leaves a lot of oil still out there. Google the fish and shrimp that is being harvested out of the Gulf after the BP spill.

They did pay the cleanup bill and if you read carefully (or at all) the article notes they're looking / investigating for damage. Have family on the ground there, involved directly with fisheries, and the word is overall there's been little if any damage to the fishery and shoreline damage has been easy to identify and remediate or develop a plan to address.

They should pay for damages and for the cleanup. If less than 1 percent was recovered, there will be a lot of damage.
