OSHA revises account of how driller died

NORTH SLOPE -- A Doyon Drilling Inc. supervisor killed Monday on an offshore drilling rig was working with two other employees to remove a door to a work area when he somehow got trapped between a pipe elevator and a wall on the rig, according to the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

"He suffered some sort of traumatic injury and died as a result," said Dean Ikeda, a Seattle-based regional administrator for OSHA.

David James, 56, was working on Spy Island, a man-made gravel pad off Harrison Bay, in the Beaufort Sea.

The fatality remains under investigation. OSHA dispatched four investigators from Anchorage in its investigation of what happened and they will remain in the

OSHA needs to step up their worker protections and inspections on these rigs.

Sounds pretty technical to me. No wonder we need a big, fat government agency with highly-paid bureaucrats. Ordinary folks like us would never be able to figure out that a guy died on account of "some sort of" injuries.
