Oil boom too much for pipelines

UPI.com -- There won't be enough pipeline capacity to handle North American oil even if the planned Keystone XL pipeline gets built, an analysis says.

Research broker ITG says oil production from Western Canada could double its current rate and reach 5.7 million barrels per day by 2025. It adds that around 600,000 bpd would need to move by rail in the short-term because of the lack of pipeline capacity. That's the scenario even if new pipelines come on stream.

"Pipeline capacity in the Western Canada, U.S. Rockies and U.S. Bakken production areas will not keep pace with supply growth over the next four years, requiring incremental rail shipment volumes of 600,000 bpd even if all planned pipeline projects, such as Keystone XL and Northern Gateway, proceed," the report reads.

Ya, I know it is crazy. Eastern Canada and Western Canada have never been on the same page with respect to energy.

In addition to oil there is electricity. Ontario doesn't buy electricity from Manitoba. So we sell it to northern central states. About a year ago we signed a deal to provide 2 billion dollars of power to Wisconsin.

Oh well I suppose it make sense in some politicians mind. :-)

So you sell your oil at one end, while at the other you're paying a premium price for oil.

Canada does have to sell our oil to the USA.

I think the Northern Gateway pipeline is a better alternative. That way Canada can ship the oil to China instead. The advantage is we then receive world prices for the oil, instead of the discounted price the USA is paying.

So don't send it to the Gulf, where it's just going for export.

Build refineries nearer the oil fields, or nearer where we need the fuel.

Build a pipeline from the Canadian oil fields to the east coast, so refineries there aren't so dependent on expensive foreign oil.

At least try to do something that makes sense!

Oil boom too much for pipelines, transported by rail tanker cars full speed ahead! Transporting crude oil by pipeline is the most efficient way to move it to the gulf coast but railroad tanker cars and truck tankers will have to do for now. There is just to much crude oil bottled up to be transported for now!
Fuel prices at the pump will Not be cheaper with crude oil destinated for the gulf coast refineries..... The gulf coast refineries will produce fuel to be exported to the world market for higher profits.
More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is!
Take care of the domestic fuel market first and above all else before exporting and selling our oil and/or fuel!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

the pipeline would be a start, at least more oil coming to the states from other than the middle east, Venezuala, or Mexico. Maybe when building the pipeline they can tandem an extra pipe or 2 several feet apart so as to not cause weakening of the land and then potentially deliver 2-3 times as much oil with little extra cost (Just materials and a minimal amount of labor), being done at the same time.

No, @John747. I'm just here to question the assumptions that some members of the forum make. A forum is supposed to be a place to exchange actual ideas, instead of just getting up on your soapbox.

How are they gonna get it to China without a pipeline, @BigKart? By wheelbarrow? Tar sands are the very last type of petroleum we should be using. That stuff is basically like trying to get gasoline out of asphalt.

Just call it what it really is... Runny coal.

they are building a new refinery in N.D but it's only going to be used for the state of N.D where the oil is at ! That is not going to help the rest of the states ! The Oil Corp.s don't want to spend their profits to build new refineries ! They just want keep what they have so when it shut down time they shut all of them the same time ! with all of them down they raise the price at the pumps so you & I pay more at the pumps !! Just like some oil Corp are selling there refineries !

We do not need more pipelines. Oil companies are just competing with each other to be the first to export the oil into global markets to pocket the profits. No advantage for domestic consumption and pricing. Screw the oil companies and those that are ruining the country so they can get rich of their little royalties.

If we don't build the pipeline, do you think the oil will stay in the ground in Canada? Me neither! It will get extracted and sent to China where it will create just as much (or more) greenhouse gasses. It's just a matter of where it will be refined and used, not whether it will be refined and used.

To splitrman,
From the short article,
"The American Association of Railroads reports petroleum product delivery by rail increased 58.3 percent for the week ending March 16 year-on-year."
