Rising gas prices could mean painful 2013

The Leader -- CORNING, N.Y. —

Local gas prices continued to rise over the weekend, bucking seasonal trends and signaling a potentially painful spring.

Statewide gas prices rose to an average of $4.09 per gallon on Monday, up $0.02 over the week and more than $0.10 since Sept. 1. Year-over-year, the average statewide price for a gallon of regular gas is $0.37 higher.

Local prices, in general, are comparable to the statewide averages. New York’s gas prices are about $0.30 higher than the national average. Nationally, gas prices have broken daily record highs for 43 consecutive days.

The rising gas prices are bucking typical fall trends -- prices usually decline beginning in late September.

Seems like the oil companies are setting themselves up for a big fall. Yes EV's have there problem... but to go to work and the grocery store will be fine for short trips. I spend about $294.00 per month on gas for my $2007 Jeep Cherokee. That's $4,728 per year or $23,640 in gas costs in a 5 year period. Generally I keep my car 5 years. With the Governments $7,500 energy credit for an EV... I could save about $27,300 with the purchase of an EV. An Nissan leaf in El Paso would give me about 99 Miles per gallon at our KWH rate of 11.5/kwh. Compared to the 12.5 mile/gallon on my 2007 Jeep Cherokee, An equal estimated fill up on the EV would be would cost me $19.80 Compared to the $73.00 I pay to put 20 gallons in my Cherokee
