Sales of hybrid, electric cars take off

Eagle Tribune -- When a new hybrid Prius is delivered to the Rockingham Toyota Scion dealership in Salem, N.H., it sells almost immediately.

"Every time we get one on the lot, it lasts about five hours," said Marc Smith, the general sales manager. "Most times, it's gone before it even reaches the dealership."

High gas prices and consumers' desire for greener vehicles are driving sales of efficient gas, hybrid and electric cars, dealers and customers said.

In the first four months of 2012, hybrid car sales were up 37.2 percent over last year. Electric car sales were up a staggering 323 percent, but that number is a little deceiving because sales are very low nationally.

That compares to a 13.4 percent hike in other car sales, according to Alan Baum of Baum and Associates, a market research firm.

Some look, but still do not see. This news article is about both hybrids and EVs. Of course EVs are not for everyone, but it is a start and will only improve with technology advancements and price reductions. Some of the negative commenters here are either too cheap or financially unable to buy any sort of new or slightly used vehicle, and that is quite obvious.

For those who are able, just try a test drive on a hybrid first and develop your own choice based upon your needs. We have not regrettted our purchase of a Nissan Altima hybrid over three years ago. The dealer sale price was excellent at over $5000 off the list price. It has been an excellent driving car in both performance and fuel economy that is always over 40 mpg. It is also super reliable with absolutely no problems at all.
The Ford Fusion hybrid is even better and will likely be our next hybrid purchase!

Please note this is a local area news article that has no national agenda or promotional gimmick to it. It is not an "advertisement", but simple and real local news.

Unfortunately customers are frantic to look for any relief possible from gas prices.

I have no doubt that hybrid vehicles sell best in markets where gas prices are highest. It only makes sense.

"I'm waiting for a full electric that can go at least 300 miles per charge, A/C, Heat, Radio, Power windows and windshield wipers."

Wait no more! They are available if you have $100,000 to spend on a vehicle. Until the battery costs come down don't expect a reasonable price for an electric that can go 300 miles on a charge.

"People are concerned about charging station, like what if I want to drive the car across the country?"

I can't imagine driving cross country with an electric vehicle. You would have to stop every 100 miles for four hours to recharge unless new technology becomes available.

I love it when people try to use the payback argument against a hybrid, as if they do a cost-benefit analysis of buying any car - wonder how long they figure it takes to recover the cost of a Mercedes or BMW? What savings would you base such a choice on? Envy? One upping the Jones? Feeling superior? Cost-benefit is NOT what drives many/most car purchases, so why try to make it relevant to EVs or hybrids?

even with govt rebates, it takes too many years to make up the difference of buying a gas only car.

Gas is expensive. But even with high gas prices, there's still not the payback on these expensive vehicles.

They have a bad image at the moment. To me, this is a lot like flat panel TVs about 10 years ago. There's no need to go dump your working technology in favor of this new stuff. BUT, as your old tech is getting replaced, it makes sense to CONSIDER the new tech. If you dump a convential car simply for fuel savings, you will lose.

Sales push, not news! WTH!! I'm waiting for a full electric that can go at least 300 miles per charge, A/C, Heat, Radio, Power windows and windshield wipers. that's all, Nothing more than a 110 volt plug for the common wall socket and a 100 foot cord that spools back into the fender. Can't be that hard with the batteries of today, so why the auto makers scared to make it? Oh that's right, the Oil industry runs them.. My bad...

well duh, they take 10-20 years to see any savings. Replacement batteries are more expensive than replacing your transmission and lackluster performance. Why would anyone want one.

I don't know who has the disposable income to buy these toys, but good for them. If I had money to burn it would go to a classic American car, not the crap that's rolling off the lots these days

Makes sense, hybrids are proving to be long-lived vehicles in general and their reliability also outperforming their conventional gasoline-only counterparts. San Francisco and New York cities are using various hybrids as taxis and finding them to be useful for as much as 350K miles.
