Study: 1 in 10 US Vehicles To Be Diesels by 2015

Hybrid Cars -- Basing its bullishness for diesel proliferation on a study done by Carnegie Mellon University, German company Bosch says to get ready for 10 percent of all American vehicles to be diesel powered within the next three years...

It’s long been recognized that diesel cars can be up to 30-percent more fuel efficient than their gasoline counterparts and can in cases deliver a driving range almost double – or as much as 700 miles versus a typical 350-400 mile radius for gasoline cars.

And more are on their way, including the Chevrolet Cruze diesel, based on GM's successful compact that sold 232,000 units last year, Jeep is offering...

The study was done several years ago and a lot of things have changed so the conclusions are obviously in question. A barrel of crude yields a lot less diesel than gasoline so a significant increase in diesel vehicles share of the market would probably result in a very significant increase in the price of diesel fuel. This would make diesel vehicles less attractive.

Ok we need to stop looking at the pump price. A 40mpg diesel car cost is around $.98 per mile at $3.95 per gallon pump price. A 30mpg gas car is around $1.19 per mile @ $3.57 per gallon pump price. Cheaper to drive.

This measurement on diesels more than 30% more mileage also depends on other information not involved, such as the price of diesel compared to the price of gas. Gas is still cheaper. For trucks and trains, which demand high power engines and travel very longs distances, it can work fine.

its about time the US pulled it head out of.. well you know. the modern diesel is very clean and has no "fumes" that might hurt the weak. we need to stop be short minded and short sighted. add a diesel and eclectic and wow the auto to will save us all. No cold we issue they plug in.

Diesels are great! Except for the cold-weather gelling problem. Water in the fuel problem. High maintenance costs. Sulfur in the fuel problem. Urea fluid injection problem. Taxes on "commercial" (diesel-fueled) vehicles problem. Hard starts in cold weather problem. Need to heat the engine block in cold weather problem. Other than that. No problem...

That doesn't collate, How can they be 30% more fuel efficient but drive twice as far on the same gallons. That would have to be double or 100% more efficient or carry more fuel.

diesel fuel used to be TEN CENTS a gallon, and there was so much, they had problems giving it away. Now it has consistently cost MORE than premium, and they want is to use it to replace gasoline ? Who can afford that ?
