Toyota widens global sales lead over GM

Mercury News -- DETROIT -- Toyota has widened its global sales lead over General Motors after bouncing back from a series of natural disasters.

The company said Friday it sold 7.4 million vehicles globally in the first nine months of this year -- 450,000 more than General Motors. While Toyota's sales rose 28 percent in that period, GM's rose 2.5 percent, to 6.95 million cars and light-duty trucks.

Toyota's factories were hobbled by an earthquake and tsunami in early 2011, leaving it short of cars in the U.S. and other regions. But now the company has recovered, and is building and selling more vehicles globally. Germany's Volkswagen is also seeing strong global sales.

if Toyota can keep a cleaner (read: safer) safety record and less recalls, it can sustain that position for a good while. Esp. if gas stays high.

Which car would you want?

One that lasts 150,000 miles, ... or

One that lasts 300,000 miles ?

Seems like a no brainer.

Granny Mobiles have lost popularity.

Most young folks aren't looking to buy a new Buick or Cadillac !!!!

Everything works in cycles, therefore it comes as no surprise that Toyota is
still gaining ground despite all of their troubles

It does not help GM when they dropped some of their better brands in recent years like Saturn, Pontiac and Oldsmobile. Lot of loyal owners in those brands who have gone elsewhere after being betrayed by GM.

For all the people who were not paying attention, Obama TOOK GM through bankruptcy!
Problem was he broke several banking laws in the way he did it. Romney's idea would have cost less and saved more jobs and GM would have come out stronger than they are now, Ask all the Delphi workers and the 100,000 people who lost their jobs at dealerships how Obama's plan worked for them.
