TransCanada looks at possible eastbound pipeline to ship crude

CBC.ca -- The CEO of TransCanada Corp. confirmed Friday that the company is in the early stages of weighing a plan to ship Western Canadian crude to eastern refineries that currently rely on expensive imports from overseas.

"We have a lot of work to do technically. We have a lot of work to do in conversations with our shippers. But at the 30,000-foot level, it seems to make sense to people," Russ Girling told reporters following the pipeline and utility company's annual general meeting.

"So we're going to actively pursue it and see if we can turn it into an opportunity for both the oil and gas industry and for TransCanada."

Eastern Canadian refiners have asked TransCanada whether it's feasible to send Western Canadian crude their way so that they don't have to buy a raw product based on higher

Sounds good to refine our own fuel
but does that mean we will be able to buy gas at
a producer nation price which is alot lower than what we pay now
the world price, we need a break from the large company profits,
from resources of the country

Those darn Canadians - always resourceful and pragmatic.

Someone needs to stop these rogue elements. (Tongue firmly in cheek.)

One of the problems of sending this dirty sand oil to the Gulf refineries was that the pipeline would go through the fragile Oglala Aquifer, but now they want to put a leaky pipeline through the Great Lakes water basin.

Big Oil doesn't care what it screws up as long as it makes money.

We can live without oil, but we cannot live without water.

The $64,000 question for Canada's refineries in the East is whether they can process the heavier and sour crude from the dirty tar sands when they are more geared toward lighter and sweeter Brent Crude that they normally import.

Let's build the infrastructure to extract, move and refine oil and gas throughout North America.

Beside, Canadians would be much better customers for Canadian oil than Americans have turned out to be. We would gladly pay say $110 a barrel for it, rather than importing it from the mideast or Venezuela at say $120-125 a barrel as is the case now. It even more galling that the US is stiffing Canada to the tune of only paying $75.00 a barrel for Canadian crude, really a giveaway price--and a massive subsidy of the US economy by Canadians.

South? No. West? No. East? Not decided yet, but probably no. So, anyone want to suggest North?

No, CHINA is west for Alberta crude, and that is being considered as well. The pipelines EAST would be to supply eastern Canada refineries in Ontario, Quebec, and possibly Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

If they're going that way couldn't they use the Great Lakes as part of the line?

Will it it lower gas prices for Canadians? Doubt it!

Sounds like a ploy to put pressure back on the U.S.

"This was an interesting article. I am still confused as to why oil must be transported such long distances. Would it not be possible to construct environmentally secure refineries in the largest urban area near the oil field and refine gasoline there? "

Then they can ship the more volitile refined products through a pipeline. Brilliant!

"No humble, TransCanada and Royal Dutch Shell really "stiffed" Eastern Canada by not starting with this approach and design first. That could potentially lower the exorbitant gasoline and diesel prices that Canadians now pay!!!"
====================================================================

If TransCanada was desiring to " . . . get their crude to the highest bidder . . ", then they would be doing what most every business was trying to do for their investors. U.S. companies export much of their crude oil and refined products overseas, because it commands a higher price. To infer that getting the most money for their products in some sort of aberration is misleading. And there is nothing wrong with this objective.

To get their crude to the Gulf of Mexico was TransCanada's first strategy; no doubt encouraged by our Department of State. But after 3 years of jumping through all the necessary hoops with a "thumbs up" by our State Department and to eventually have it nixed by BO who didn't have this as part of his political agenda, what are they supposed to do?

They are pursuing the development of the Keystone XL in two segments and examining all other options, as well. As a country we are very fortunate to be in a position to assist them with this pipeline. Canada is already our biggest trading partner and having the pipeline traverse our land is an added benefit because of the American jobs that it will generate and give a measure of security for both TransCanada and US.

Reducing reliance on higher priced offshore oil for lower priced domestic oil is always a good idea.

It would stimulate domestic growth, reduce offshore dependency and affords the ability to explore cleaner extraction and the higher development of alternative energy... providing its done properly!

Who knows, the oilsands may be the economic upswing required to allow Canada to become an extremely green friendly country without bankrupting the nation!!

Sounds like a smart move, especially if the pipeline stays in Canada where it is not subject to Obama's veto.
