US DOT: Auto makers should disable in-dash electronics when cars are moving

PC World -- Automobile makers should prevent drivers from using their in-vehicle electronic devices to browse the Internet and send text messages while their vehicles are moving, the U.S. Department of Transportation has recommended.

Auto makers should also lock out drivers in moving cars from reading text messages, viewing photographs, displaying scrolling text, and using video apps, the DOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommended in voluntary guidelines released this week.

How to legislate or enforce is problematic.

Right seat person is also called Navigator. They need access to maps, addresses that might be in email.

If we lock all cell phones while moving, then directional input is hampered, even if given by right seat passenger.

Not gonna happen. Sadly I agree that the devices should NOT work as it causes DISTRACTED drivers. Even with all of the "NEW" safety features, nothing beats a FOCUSED driver.

If that happens, where they "lock out" the electronics, then it should go for the police AND cab drivers.

This may sound good on paper, but this will not fly with the consumer and will hurt the auto industry if they incorporate this technology into their cars.

Not Big Brother.....it's evil uncle!
How will they isolate the driver position from all other passengers or eliminate the use of handheld devices?
Instead of trying to "Protect" the people from themselves they continue to pander to the lack of personal responsibility. As soon as people understand that there are real consequences to there actions, behaviour will start to change.

that's as it should be....when u r moving in the car ur main focus should be driving the vehicle and watching on what is going around ur car and not all the gadgets in the car

Hey, here's a thought! Why not require all new vehicles have eight speed manual transmissions? That way people would be too busy driving their cars instead of playing with their phones. The DOT is absolutely right!

Why does the DOT not make it an order that it happens when the car is put into gear?

Agree with the theory behind it, but don't agree with forcing people to do anything. That's not a good thing.

What?!? Now they expect the driver to actually concentrate on driving, rather than be focused on all the fun in-vehicle electronic devices? How boring!

GPS devices make me feel safer, I am assured I am on the right path, I dont have to check every street sign to see if it might be the one I should take. The GPS advises me my next turn is 1/4 mile ahead. I can safely move to the correct lane instead of waiting to the last moment and trying to force my way into the lane. I am very much less distracted with a GPS than without one.

A GPS is an electronic device. How will it be controlled? The cars need to be running at the time.
