U.S., German makers agree on electric-car charging

USA Today -- Major U.S. and German automakers have agreed on a common electric-car charging standard that will speed the recharging of batteries in as little as 20 minutes.

Ford says it, along with Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen, have agreed on a common system for fast charging of vehicle in the U.S. and Europe. It's going to be demonstrated today at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 (EVS26) in Los Angeles, where Drive On will reporting.Don't think the agreement will bring peace to the electric-car world. Bloomberg News' Alan Ohnsman reports that Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Tesla Motors use competing technology.

A standard is good. But public charging at 20 minutes is still too long. Nobody wants to sit in their car for 20 minutes while it charges. The best places to recharge are probably at home, at work, and at a grocery/retail store.

Given the current sanctions, gas should be about 15 cents per gallon in Iran right now.

God forbid if charging systems were standardized!!Is this to promote brand loyalty? "Yeah, I bought another GM EV because I already have the charger." Its like a cell phone.

This is a great step forward, now they need to improve storage technology so there is not a long term performance loss due to quick charges.

Fast charging your Nissian Leaf reduces battery life by years
"If you fast charge your Nissan Leaf more than once per week, you could see a decrease in your vehicle battery life by several years.

Mark Perry, Nissan’s director of product planning, said, “If fast charging is the primary way that a Leaf owner recharges, then the gradual capacity loss is about 10 percent more than 220-volt charging. In other words, it will bring the capacity…closer to 70 percent after 10 years.”

Standards are good (although they never seem to be standard).

Should become the world standard now, if any other car makers want to sell their product.
