Why Toyota and GM Are Pushing Fuel-Cell Cars to Market

MIT Technology Review -- Hydrogen-powered vehicles have been out of the spotlight for years, but they’re about to make a surprising comeback. Toyota says it will unveil a hydrogen fuel-cell-powered sedan later this year that will go on sale in 2015; several other automakers, meanwhile, have announced partnerships to commercialize the technology (see “Ford, Daimler, and Nissan Commit to Fuel Cells”), including GM and Honda, which announced such a collaboration this week.

While many challenges remain for hydrogen vehicles, in recent years researchers have made big improvements in the oft-maligned technology, including greatly lowering its cost. As a result, fuel-cell vehicles look poised to play a significant role in meeting ambitious vehicle emissions regulations, particularly in places such as California.

fuel cells are probably good, but there's more R&D to be done.

The article has two price quotes for the Toyota fuel-cell powered sedan at $100,000 and $50,000 respectively which is definitely out of reach for 90+% of the vehicle using public for a small to medium size sedan. This is before the problem of hydrogen fuelling stations has even been addressed. The concept for hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles has indeed come a very long way from the millions per fuel-cell used in satellites and exploratory deep space vehicles 30 years ago but its technology has not yet advanced to the point of being an affordable, practical and attractive alternative option for for the vast majority of vehicle buyers.

"at what price point???"

From what I've read, the first ones on the market will be up in the Tesla price range.

We need other types to bring more competition on oil and lower the prices, but we also need to move on to a better energy source.

Maybe the Feds will give me $7,000 to buy one of these. These actually sound feasible, unlike the electric cell car.

I did not know that much improvement in Hydrogen powered cars had occurred in the last few years. They are getting closer to actually becoming practical.

Get it on the market and we'll see what it can do.

Probably still expensive though prices have been lowered.

Fuel cells worked for us in orbit and on trips to the Moon. Applying technology to the auto industry is about 30 years overdue.
